The Purdue North Central baseball team split a doubleheader with Aquinas College Wednesday afternoon in Grand Rapids, MI.
In the first game the Panthers won 8-3 behind the pitching of freshman Jordan Polito and senior Tony Hoolehan. Polito went 4.2 innings allowing all 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 1. Hoolehan was dominant in relief, not allowing a runner in 2.1 innings while adding a punchout.
PNC had 7 hits and were led by freshman Ty Taylor with 2 hits (2B) and 3 RBI. Junior Brad Dubois (2 hits), junior Greg Toliver (BB, RBI), sophomore Kevin Gates (2B, 2 RBI) and junior Ched Gaskin (hit, BB) all contributed for the Panthers.
PNC scored 5 runs in the 2nd, 1 in the 5th, and 2 in the 6th while Aquinas scored all their runs in the 5th inning.
In the second game the Panther offense had 9 hits but Aquinas had 14 and took advantage of 3 PNC errors for the difference.
Aquinas scored 3 in the 1st, 1 in the second, 3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 6th while PNC tallied 1 in the 3rd, 4 in the 4th and 1 in the 6th.
Senior Leddrew Smith started and took the loss for the Panthers giving up 7 runs (5 earned) on on 8 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter. Freshman Dan Snyder came on in relief and gave up 1 run on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 2 in 3.1 innings.
Sophomore Colin Willis led the PNC offense with 3 hits (2 3B's) and 3 RBI. Sophomore Trevor Williams (RBI, BB) added 2 more hits including his first collegiate home run, while juniors Ched Gaskin and Tyson Blattner picked up an RBI apiece. Freshman Ty Taylor (hit, BB, SB) also contributed for the Panthers.
The Panthers (22-26) play again on Saturday when they take on Trinity International in a CCAC doubleheader in Deerfiled, IL. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
